Class led assemblies

Each class runs an assembly once a term where parents are invited to come and see what the children have been learning in class. It is an opportunity for all chidlren in the school to celebrate their learning and experience leadership.

 

School Sports & Electives Programe

For 6 afternoons per term, all children work in mixed age groups and based on our house system, participating in a variety of sporting codes for two terms of the year. In the other terms an elective programme is on offer where the children could be involved in Tikanaga Maori activities and for the other term Craft, Science or Technology activities.

 

Education Outside the Classroom

We offer an overnight camp experience at school for Year 3 children, a 2 night off-site camp for our Year 4 children, a 3 night off-site camp for our Year 5-6 children and a 4 night off-site camp for our Year 7-8 children every year. The camp cost is subsidised per child.

We also offer an optional Ski Trip in August for Year 4-8 children and a Marae overnight stay for Year 5-6 children.

Our Year 7&8 chidlren attend a Leadership Conference in May each year in Rotorua, are involved in the ‘Splash, Paddle & Dash’ at the Mount in Term 1, attend a ‘Surfing Experience’ day at the Mount and a Water Safety Programme at Greerton Pools.

 

Sports

We offer the following sporting opportunities at Oropi School:

Rippa Rugby, Hockey, Flippa Ball, Basketball and Netball.

We make use of sports people to come in and work with small groups and classes of children to develop specific sporting skills. For example, we have had tennis coaching for each class in the school and a cricket player come in and work with each class on their small ball skills.

 

School Gardens

Children have the opportunity to work with parents, the wider community and teachers to create and maintain our six vegetable plots we have in the school. Each class is also responsible for the maintenance of the grounds in a specific area of the school (gardens).

 

Piano/Guitar

A qualified music teacher provides Piano and Guitar Lessons in school on a Tuesday afternoon.  The timetable rotates so that students are not missing the same component of the classroom programme each week.

 

Choir

When the school is not involved in producing its own musical during the year, children in the middle and upper school have the opportunity to be in the choir for the Tauranga Primary Schools Music Festival at Baycourt.

 

Instrumental Groups

Tuition in Marimba and Ukulele is offered during Friday lunchtime.  School Ukuleles are available for students taking advantage of this learning opportunity.

 

Gymnastics

A Gymnastics Club currently operates within the school during lunchtime on Monday, lead by a professional coach from the Bay Gymnastics Centre.  Our gymnasts are involved in competition against clubs in other schools.

 

Kapa Haka

Students throughout the whole school have the opportunity to be involved in the Kapa Haka group which meet once a week for 60 minutes.

 

GATE

We offer an extension programme for students on a Wednesday (Seniors) and Thursday (Juniors) morning from 9.00 am – 10.30 am.  Students attend based upon recommendation from their class teacher, using a set of criteria based on the curriculum area being covered and in consultation with parents/caregivers. Each term the children involved are likely to change because a different curriculum area is covered each term.

 

Reading Recovery & Support Programmes

A Reading Recovery Programme operates within the school on a daily basis, providing additional one on one support for students in our Junior School who experience initial difficulty in Reading. We also have staff who work with small groups across all levels of the school in Literacy and Numeracy to either extend or ‘plug gaps’ in learning.

 

Christian Religious Education

This is offered to Year 1-6 students weekly from March to November.  Parents who wish to withdraw their children from the programme may do so through a letter to the Principal. It is for a half hour session on a Tuesday morning. 

 

Technology

Year 7/8 students attend Technology at the purpose built facility at Tauranga Primary School.  All students have an opportunity to be involved in Food Technology, Hard Materials (Workshop) and Soft Materials (Textiles).
