Ko te Tamaiti te Putake o te Kaupapa

The Child - the Heart of the Matter

The Education Review Office is the government department which reviews and reports
publicly on the quality of education in all New Zealand schools and early childhood services, including private schools, kura kaupapa Mäori (Mäori language immersion schools), special schools and ngä köhanga reo (Mäori language early childhood groups).

These are the findings of the Education Review Office latest report on Oropi School 2008

The Education Review Office (ERO) Evaluation

Oropi School is a full primary school catering for Years 1 to 8 students and is located on the outskirts of Tauranga in a rural farming area. Grounds are extensive, attractively presented and feature well-maintained buildings that include a large library/computer suite and a modern administration area. Natural features and playground equipment are integrated to provide a challenging well-used environment.

The school has made progress in addressing the recommendations in the last ERO review and is now working towards improving systems and processes for gathering and reporting student achievement data. In addition the principal and senior management team are developing an appraisal system to support the ongoing professional growth of teachers. The board of trustees is also working towards ensuring appropriate professional support is available to the principal in relation to her performance goals. The school's achievement information for literacy and mathematics indicates that the significant majority of students achieve at or above national expectations and students make progress as they move through the school.

Since 2006 teachers have been participating in the Early Numeracy Project (ENP) and the Advanced Numeracy Project (ANP) and are currently working towards sustainability. As a result teachers are becoming knowledgeable about and confident in the use of strategies to raise student achievement in numeracy. Mathematics has been used to develop a partnership between home and school including a focus on parent involvement and participation. Parents are now more able to support their children's numeracy learning in practical and enjoyable contexts.

Teachers use a wide range of effective strategies to engage students in learning and encourage them to be positive and capable learners. Classroom environments reflect literacy and numeracy teaching and learning, affirm students' successes and celebrate their achievements.

Students enjoy participating and succeeding in a variety of cultural opportunities that include music, the arts, and sporting, technology and academic pursuits. Their relationships with adults and amongst themselves are positive and respectful. The school tone impacts positively on students' confidence as successful learners.

The principal, senior management and teachers continue to maintain high expectations for student behaviour that are well known and realised throughout the school. The principal is involved in professional development alongside her teachers and promotes special programmes and projects that involve the community. These programmes include the Gifted and Talented Education programme (GATE), Kiwi Conservation and the use of local artists for community and school projects.

The new board has held community consultation meetings and has collated ideas and comments for the school's strategic planning. Sound governance is continuing and enabling the board to provide a well-resourced, safe learning environment for students and staff.
